NORA CUP

#1 Trail Rider / #1 Street Rider / #1 Flatlander / #1 Transition Rider / #1 Women’s Rider / #1 Video Part of The Year / #1 Video Of The Year / Reader’s Choice Award

For example, I think it’s important that the Women’s Rider Of The Year is voted on by other women, as it makes the award mean that much more. Each of those lists have their own separate set of parameters to be included, which is mostly leaning on people within those disciplines to make decisions.

winner is decided when I count the votes. Whoever gets the most wins. By the time I post the nominees, I already have the winner’s name etched into the eight NORA Cups.

NORA CUP

RIDE BMX

I began working for Ride BMX in 2003 and in those days, all I did was count the votes that came in from the reader’s of the magazine. The first time I counted the votes, it was pretty easy to tell that reader’s didn’t have the best grasp on the pulse of what was happening in BMX. People would seemingly vote for the rider who had the coolest photo on the voting page in the magazine.

There were a couple of instances where the person who deserved to win did not and it caused issues (most notably Van Homan in 2002 screaming “Where’s Ruben?!” and Edwin DeLaRosa never winning a NORA Cup).

I may be painting myself in a heroic light,I felt like I was a big proponent of changing voting to be done by professionals. It was hoped that the NORA Cup would be even more prestigious as it reflects what is really happening with his BMX and is voted on by the rider’s fellow professionals.

Whether it’s a popularity contest or not depends on who you ask. As with many aspects of life, people have a hard time voting for people they don’t like. But I’m really trying to make it clear that NORA Cup is not a popularity contest. It’s not about who you like best, who is your teammate, who is your friend, or who is your favorite rider. The NORA Cup is designed to recognize the best riders of the year. Voting is always subjective, but I think NORA Cup gives you the correct vote most of the time. Again, some may disagree…
